Clinical study of the Breast cancer


Abstract
Clinical review is made on 104 cases of pathologically proved breast cancer seen from 1955 through 1964. Its results are reported here.
Number of patients seen yearly shows trend toward gradual increase. The peak age incidence was in fourth and fifth decade and all cases were female.
In known duration of symptoms from -discovery of tumor mass, most of patients visited hospital from a month to a year and least within a month.
In 92.3%, initial symptom was mass, In all cases, chief complaint at first consultation was mass and in 84, 6% no other complaints were noted, Clinical symptom revealed palpable mass in 100%, palpable axillary lymphnode in 73.5% and adhesion of tumor to the skin in 59.7%. And atrophy or retraction of the nipple, adhesion of tumor to the underlying tissue, redness or pigmentation, dilatation of vein and abnormal discharge from the nipple were also noted.
Slightly larger number of incidence was seen at the left breast than the right. In location of primary tumor, upper outer quadrant was the most frequent site of location and, in order of decreasing incidence, upper inner quadrant, central, lower outer quadrant and lower inner quadrant was seen.
Most of cases were pathologically ¥± and ¥² stage.
Axillary metastasis was present 78, 3% in upper outer quadrant of primary location, 77.8% in lower outer, 66, 7% in central, 64, 4% in upper inner and 50.0% in lower inner.
Of 104 cases, radical mastectomy was performed in 86 cases and simple mastectomy in 18 cases with far advanced tumor.
